Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons lard or vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot paprika (optional, for spice)
  • 6 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 medium tomato, diced (or 2 tablespoons canned diced tomatoes)
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 4 cups water or vegetable stock
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 smoked sausage or 4-5 slices of smoked bacon (optional, for added flavor)
