Hungarian Donut (fánk)

🌟 Instructions

1️⃣ Activate the Yeast:

  • In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 10 minutes until frothy.

2️⃣ Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt.
  • Add the yeast mixture, egg yolks, melted butter, vanilla, and rum.
  • Knead until you get a soft, slightly sticky dough (about 8-10 minutes).
  • Cover with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

3️⃣ Shape the Donuts:

  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) thick.
  • Use a round cutter (or a glass) to cut out circles.
  • Place them on a tray, cover, and let rise for another 30 minutes.

4️⃣ Fry the Donuts:

  • Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the donuts for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

5️⃣ Serve and Enjoy:

  • Dust with powdered sugar and serve with apricot or raspberry jam.

🍩 Tips for Perfect Fánk:
✔️ Adding rum helps prevent the donuts from absorbing too much oil.
✔️ Always fry in small batches to keep the oil temperature stable.
✔️ For extra softness, let them rise well before frying.
